Who I Am

Kyle Phillips

I began writing about Italian food, wine, and travel a number of years ago, drifting into the field (as most do) by chance:

When I moved to Italy in 1982 one of the first books I bought was Pellegrino Artusi’s La Scienza in Cucina, which I greatly enjoyed reading as well as cooking from. So I wrote an article entitled “Through the Kitchen Window” about the picture of Italy that emerges from his tangents and sent it off to The Journal of Gastronomy, whose editor, Nancy Jenkins,  suggested I translate the whole thing. Which I did, and which Random house published as “The Art of Eating Well” in 1996.

And that’s how I got into food; in 1996 The Mining Company, which later became About.Com, asked me to do their Italian Food site and I agreed. It was a long and interesting ride, but we have now parted ways.

Wine came via travel; while I was translating Artusi I was also writing travel articles about Tuscany. It’s almost impossible to write about the Tuscan countryside without mentioning wineries, and soon I found myself visiting the wineries to taste the wines and take notes. The notes led to my starting a magazine called the Italian Wine Review, which was initially paper, and is now on the Web.

And I’m still at it, writing about Italian food, wine and travel. I hope you like what you find. It’s a vast subject, much vaster than I realized when I started out, and we have many more things to discover.

    Hi Kyle, Happy Thanksgiving.

I’d love to receive new Cosa Bolle in Pentola posts at my email account, if that’s possible. I’m at ericademane@gmail.com. I don’t see a way to sign up here. I tried it once, but my wordPress account is in my husband’s name and all the posts are going to him.

Ciao Erica, Happy T-Day to you too! I’ll have to futz a bit to figure out how to do this, because I am new to WP and rather bewildered too. Bear with me and I’ll figure it out 🙂

I hope it works. It will take time to round it out, but once it’s large enough it should attract attention. Auguroni anche a voi!

        Ciao Kyle,

What is the process required to automatically receive your blog like I was accustomed getting when you involved in the About series? I’ve had to change my password because a hacker compromised the email address. The email address has remained the same.

Vivi, ama, ridi e specialmente mangia bene,

        Ciao Art,

Sorry to hear about your being hacked. It’s awful when that sort of thing happens. To be honest, I don’t know how to set up an automatic feed. It’s on my to do list, but I want to get more content up first and then worry about that sort of thing.

Ciao Arturo, I would if I knew how, but don’t yet. When I am freer I’ll get to it, but this is a difficult period for us.

Thank you! It was a shock at the time but there are many things from the About experience I don’t miss at all.

Finally found you! I missed your posts when they ceased and finally came across you here. Ciao from Australia.

Glad you’re here! And Ciao Australia! I hope your weather is more typical for the season than what we’ve had here so far this year. It has at last gotten warm, but in a timid way that doesn’t seem summery.

We’re in the depths of winter…cold and rainy. I’m just about to browse for a hearty lentil soup recipe.
